A collection of chess sets from around the world are on exhibit at the Laredo Public Library's main branch located at the intersection of E Calton Rd and McPherson Ave.  These colorful and artistic playing pieces are wonderful examples of the wide variety of chess sets from different countries.  Each tells a story about a different time, place, people and history. The sets are from the collection of Laredo Chess Club member Dan Navarro.  Be sure to drop by and visit the display.  The exhibit runs through the end of January.  For library hours check out their website. Don't miss it!

Congratulations to Harmony Science Academy on hosting its first chess tournament.  It turned out to be a smashing success with a huge unexpected attendance of 124 players!  We would like to thank all the many schools who participated along with their hard working chess club sponsors and parents.  Great job of welcoming Harmony to the Laredo chess family!  Kudos also to our host, the Harmony PTO led by president Lisa Peterson, for their dedication and hard work.  Special recognition goes to Harmony teachers, Mr. Turan and Mr. Ozturk for their invaluable help.  Keep checking back later this week for results and photos from this event.

10/23     BELATED THANK YOUS
On behalf of the club I want to thank Mr. Jesus Cadena (Carrizo Springs Jr. High) and Ms. Rebecca Hughes (Johnson High) for the great hospitality shown to us during the recent tourneys at their respective schools.  We will be working to set up the results and photos from both events.  So be looking for them in the very near future.

10/23     OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW
Our old website on Yahoo Geocities has gone the way of the dinosaur.  Yahoo has discontinued its free website service and the old website is no longer accessible. We will continue to re-build our website here on Tripod.  Currently, only the HOME and CALENDAR pages are operational.  We will be adding more pages in the coming weeks.

About our logo
lcc-logox_2834.gif
The club logo was created by long time club member, Rey Ortiz, back in the late 1990s.  Rey photographed and edited a picture of four Staunton chess pieces from a set designed by Drueke. These sets first came into use at USCF tournaments during the mid 1960s.  They became very popular during the "Fischer Boom" era of the 1970s and remained a favorite of many players well into the 1980s when production stopped.

This chessmen were a perfect fit for our logo given that the club was established in 1969 by founders Mauro Gutierrez and Julio Perez. It was a time when this type of chess set was widely used. Today, Drueke tournaments sets such as these have become highly prized by old school players and chess set collectors alike.
